The Paca Shack is where we sell alpaca items , from scarves, hats, socks, baby wear and adults clothing to Jewellery and bedding needs. Many items are made from our alpaca here at Gem Alpaca Stud based in Fairlie, South Canterbury New Zealand.
We farm over 90 alpaca and 10 Llama.
The Llama have a very important job with their treks around our local lake. These can also be booked online or at the shop. An approx three hour trek is $65.00 per adult and $30.00 for a child 8 to 14 years which includes the drive out to the lake and morning or afternoon tea.
Alpaca fibre being hollow is extremely strong, warm and exceptionally lightweight.
The alpaca and the culture that surrounds it are steeped in history. These South American camelids were domesticated over 5000 years ago, in the high Andes, and their luxurious fibre has been used by native Indian cultures for centuries to make some of the finest woven fabric known to mankind. Alpaca fibre was reserved for Royalty and was often traded for it's own weight in gold.
Alpacas live in the mountains of Peru and Chile where it regularly drops below minus 20 degrees during the night and has a day temperature of over 25 or 30 degrees.
The natural insulating and thermal qualities of the alpaca fibre works to protect the alpacas from the cold at night and the hot desert-like sun during the day. We have taken advantage of these natural properties to bring to you a new and exciting product for your comfort.
